Web25 ago 2011 · It does happen to the Jeep 4.0 engines. Mine made a tapping sound for a month or two then the piston basically exploded, ripping the wrist pin out of the piston. If caught early you can get by with changing just the damaged piston. Am old time engine expert can tell you if the sound is camshaft speed or crankshaft speed. Web5 gen 2016 · They have the Jeep for 4 days and run all kinds of tests. From looking and from the tests they determine that it's the camshaft. There is enough wear on the camshaft gear that connects with the OPDA gear, that when it's cold it causes the wheel to wobble enough that it throws it out of the tolerances.
Yes that happens but still, the OPDA issue is real enough that a couple aftermarket companies like Crown came out with "fixes" for the OPDA problem that only happens in 05/06 models. They're not really an actual fix for the root problem caused by a redesign of the OPDA, more like a band-aid that helps. And sure enough, the upper bushing no longer exists, causing the sensor ring to flop around. The shaft moves so much side to side that it will hit the sensor. No sense just changing the sensor. Call Chrysler or a dealership with your VIN and ask them if it has already been replaced. Also, if you do not have the laughing monkeys sound, you are probably OK.
